Artist's Comments

I had always seen this scene play out this way in my head. After Erik had finished dealing with the count on the lake, he returned to Christine and realized that his Little Bag of Life and Death was missing...

I imagined this painfully slow turn over his shoulder as he looked over in her direction. To me, this was one of the most excruciatingly suspenseful moments in the story.

I hope I have done justice in illustrating it. I tried to capture that painful tilt of the head. I also was playing around with a little more stylization, just for fun. I do like pushing expressions and with Erik's long face it is quite fun to do. Also, kudos to any of you who notice the details of the nails in the walls with the little cracks. I paid particular attention to that. I always thought the reed would be kept close to the bag, but that's just my way of seeing things.

Hehe, nice. That is a great part of the book.

As for the neck tilt, I totally agree. I did one for a Halloween costume contest once and won "scariest" with only a Crow mask on. ^^

What a delight this is! All this inventing, this producing, takes place in a pleasing, lively dream.

That's a great expression; very scary!

mmm i can like, SEE the slow turn. and i like the almost comical brow-raise. it would be comical if it weren't such a dramatic scene.

The dripping wetness is great, and the slowly dawning realization is excellent. I also am a fan, for whatever reason, of the coat- it looks quite elegant.

You've portrayed his madness quite well. He is undeniably unstable at this point, and this piece shows that perfectly.

XD I've always loved that scene so much. (Well... I like most of the Persian's narrative anyway.)

I love the sense of emotion that you gave the picture.
